Governor General’s Academic Medals were created in 1873 by Lord Dufferin, Canada’s third Governor General after Confederation. Over the years, they have become the most prestigious award that students in Canadian schools can receive. At Ryerson University, the Governor General’s Gold Medal is given annually to a graduating student who achieves the highest academic standing in a GRADUATE degree.
